Homework Policy: Students are assigned homework everyday Monday- Thursday. Students record their homework in their planner along with me at the end of each day.
Typical Nightly Homework:
30 minutes of reading and a summary recorded on a reading log
Math practice page or worksheet
Spelling
Parent Signature on planner
Unfinished assignments, writing, or tests/papers that need to be signed by a parent
All homework is a review of lessons taught in class. Nightly homework should take your child NO LONGER than 1 hour and 20 mins. Math homework and any other assignments should take up to 50 minutes. Reading will take 30 minutes.
Parent Involvement AFTER your child finishes their homework, please check their planner to ensure that they have completed all of the required homework NEATLY and COMPLETELY.
Then, please sign their planner. Your signature lets me know that you are aware of the homework your child has been assigned each night and that they have taken time to complete their work neatly.
A Quiet Work Space Please help your student by creating a quiet work environment for them to successfully complete their homework. A homework area can be at a desk in a quiet room or the kitchen table. Students work best when away from distractions like TVs or computers.
Check on your child to see that they are on task or to see if they need any help. If it takes your child longer than than this to finish their homework on a daily basis, consider what is preventing them from finishing their work in a timely manner.
Students may struggle to finish their homework in 1 hour and 20 mins because they are distracted by family members, or are off task doing something other than homework. Students may have extra unfinished work to complete or have trouble understanding the assignment because of an absence.
Missing Homework: Students who do not complete the required homework on time finish their work at recess and lose play time.
If your child is consistently missing homework, you will be notified. Homework is an important part of reviewing lessons and concepts learned in class. It is also important for students to learn responsibility in 5th grade.
Students need to complete their homework EVERYDAY to practice learned skills, build independent study skills and to learn to be responsible!
Absences If your child is absent, their homework will be collected for them by a table member and placed on their desk. Students have the same number of days that they were absent to complete their homework. For example; If they were absent on Monday, then their homework from Monday night will be due on Wednesday along with their homework from Tuesday.
Please note that many of our lessons and activities do not have corresponding homework nor can the lessons be made up. So please, make your best effort to have your child present in school each day.
No Homework Coupons No Homework coupons are given for positive behavior in class. Students may only use their homework coupons on one side of a Math homework practice page or worksheet per night. I will inform students if homework coupons are not allowed on a specific assignment.
